In my career as an academic hematologist, I've experienced firsthand the challenges and struggles of trying to balance work and personal life. I wish someone had guided me through a framework that could have saved me from the overwhelming demands and constant box-checking mentality. That's why I am passionate about teaching this framework to help women in academic hematology achieve work-life balance and unlock their true potential. Let me share with you my story and the valuable lessons I learned along the way.
The Box-Checking Trap
When I started my career, I had been accustomed to the box-checking mentality. It had served me well during my training years, but as I transitioned into a faculty position, I realized that the number of boxes seemed infinite. Patient care activities, research responsibilities, and trainee education all came with their own set of boxes to be checked. I found myself running on a hamster wheel, trying to please everyone and make them happy.
The People-Pleaser's Journey
As a fantastic people pleaser, I attempted to keep everyone satisfied. I aimed to please my mentors, division chief, department chair, administrators, trainees, and colleagues. However, in the process of trying to make everyone else happy, I lost sight of my own well-being and personal life. My work-life balance suffered, and I found myself overwhelmed and overworked.
The Struggle Continues
Despite my efforts to check all the boxes, life sucked! I was overworked, underpaid, and constantly borrowing time from the margins of my life to keep up. The pressure to excel in all areas of my career while maintaining a personal life was taking a toll on my physical and mental health. I reached a breaking point, realizing that I couldn't continue living this way.
The Turning Point
Hitting rock bottom was a wake-up call for me. Sleeping on the floor of my office over a holiday weekend, isolated from family and friends, made me realize that something needed to change. I started searching for answers, determined to find a way out of my misery and achieve the work-life balance I craved.
Discovering the Framework
It took years of introspection and learning, but I eventually found the keys to success and work-life balance. I discovered what I wished I had known from the very beginning of my faculty job. Implementing a strategic framework, I not only achieved work-life balance but also revolutionized my productivity, eliminated nights and weekends of work, and even doubled my income.
